"History is the absence of equilibrium"
- Italo Calvino
The absence of
equilibrium implies a state of imbalance and disharmony leading to constant
change. It is the sequence of these changes, and the innumerable moments
of friction that arise, which comprise our history. The artist's job
here is to explore the consequences of this tumultuous sequence, not
only examining the impact on individual and group identities, but also
continuously probing the authorship and origin of these narratives.
My work creates compositions culled from diverse moments in the historical
realm, bringing incongruous elements together into an irrational and
non-linear narrative that deviates from the traditional. This interruption
of logic provides the viewer with a new instrument by which to gauge
the authenticity of information currently being disseminated in our
contemporary mythology. My work aims to further underscore the state
of imbalance of history by adding a grain of sand, one more 'Once upon
a time
" and so doing contribute to a history and a tradition
that are in themselves testaments to our duplicitous, and contradictory
nature."
